Robert (Animal) Smyth
Robert began his musical expedition as a guitarist while at primary school but had no concept of how the instrument actually worked, and it was removed from him after he began blowing it.

How do you know when a percussionist is knocking on your door?

The knocking speeds up, slows down and carries on when you've opened the door.

He started playing trombone at secondary school which very quickly revealed the fact that he had absolutely no discernable talent for music whatsoever. Completely tone deaf and devoid of any sense of rhythm, percussion was an obvious choice. He liked hanging around musicians (strange chap) and joined Templemore in 1979 were he has been irritating people ever since. (we tried moving but he found us)

His progress through the ranks of the South Eastern Music Centre and City of Belfast School of Music was painfully slow due to the fact that he rarely attended, never practised and wouldn't listen to anything he was told. (nothing new there)

His influences include Animal out of the Muppets and the man who bangs his gong at the start of Rank Pictures (painful). Regarding his philosophy on playing percussion Robert says 'when in doubt hit it a clout and hit it hard'. (on the beat would be a novelty Robert).

Robert has three small daughters - they are fully grown, they just happen to be small. A very keen footballer he could have played for Liverpool and Northern Ireland but he was better at playing the guitar (see beginning)
